VIVARIUM

The Vivarium was built between 1998-2001 with funds from the BBU and the Faculty of Biology and Geology.
The Vivarium serves three basic purposes, as follows:

  1. didactic, for the study of the following basic disciplines: Vertebrate Zoology, Invertebrate Zoology, Ethology and some optional disciplines: Herpethology, Entomology;
  2. scientific research in the following domains: Vertebrate Zoology, Ethology, Herpetology;
  3. educating the public, especially school students, on knowing and protecting the autochthonous species of reptiles, amphibiens, birds, micromammals.

The permanent exhibition contains aproximately 57 animal species. Upon its inauguration in 2001, the Vivarium contained only one collection of reptiles and amphibians. At present, besides the aforementioned, the Vivarium also contains 10 fish species, 9 micromammal species and 6 bird species. We thus mention a few: The Puff Adder, the Rainbow Boa, Leopard Gekko, the Nile Crocodile, Chinchilla, the Greek Tortoise, the Salamander, etc.

The Vivarium offers voluntarily (veterinary) specialty assistance for the reptile or bird species that are diseased or injured. It can also house small-sized pets when the owners leave the city during their holidays.

The Vivarium is located on No. 5-7 Clinicilor Street, within the Zoological Institute, on the west side of the building, under the Zoological Museum.
